PIRAEUS

A brief guide to a bed and a good meal in Piraeus

On the map of Piraeus, to the centre right, you will find the hotel Anita/Argo. It is a simple hotel, reasonably priced and is about fifteen minutes walk from the port of Piraeus. If you are looking for somewhere not too noisy this is the right place where the staff are friendly and helpful. The complex consists of two hotels, the Anita and the Argo with a common entrance and reception. There are a total of 57 bedrooms on 4 or 5 floors some with air-conditioning. All rooms have shower/WC, television and telephone. There is a large welcoming air-conditioned lounge with a bar, cafeteria and television. At the side of the hotel there is a small private parking lot with video surveillance that is closed at night. If you arrive by boat a call to the hotel will bring a member of staff to greet you and collect you by minibus. For early departures, perhaps by air, there is an efficient wake-up service. The staff will be pleased to organise a taxi to help you to discover the sights of Athens. If you know your date of travel contact the hotel by E-Mail or fax. Because of its quiet location I have never had a problem finding a room at the Anita/Argo, even at busy periods.

A useful  advice
You can book and buy your boat tickets to Milos directly in the port at the travel agency Filippis Tours. The  office is only  150m away from the arriving point of the X 96 bus from the airport and the taxis  and next to the  cafe-restaurant  FILOXENIA (see red arrow on the map)
Mr Nikos Kiosoglou, a good friend  who speaks many languages is always very helpful. You can either  book  your tickets on line http://www.filippistours.gr or send  your  request by mail  and pick up your tickets  on arrival just before  your ship departs. Working hours 06.00-22.00  daily.

A SENSIBLY PRICED RESTAURANT
It's not easy to find a non-touristy place to eat in Piraeus where one can get a snack at any time of the day. At the right side of the port a short step from the ferryboats you will find my favorite taverna, "The Old Bakers" restaurant. It is clean, well-managed and besides international cuisine it also serves many Greek specialties. The service is very easy for those who can't speak the local language because at the back of the restaurant you will see an imposing display of dishes to help you decide. You can take your time before ordering and service is to your table. With a good 'open' local wine and fresh bread daily what more could you wish for? And all this without a knowledge of Greek!
Beer lovers will find Belgian and German specialties.
